Police say they're welcoming another below-average summer holiday road toll - but aren't celebrating

Seven people died on the roads this summer holiday period - including two pedestrians, and four sole occupants in single-car crashes.

Director of Road Policing, Superintendent Steve Greally says seven deaths is still seven families losing loved ones for no good reason.

Kiwis have been driving less, but AA Senior Policy Adviser Sarah Geard says other factors are also at play.

She says they are ongoing improvements to high-risk highways over many years, along with more enforcement of drink-driving rules.
