Matildas star Ellie Carpenter scores stunner in Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Barcelona

In a player-of-the-match performance, Ellie Carpenter sends Chelsea fans into a frenzy with a brilliant goal against European heavyweights Barcelona.

Matildas defender Ellie Carpenter has scored a breathtaking goal for Chelsea in its 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the Women's Champions League.

Carpenter, who was named player of the match, brought the Stamford Bridge crowd to its feet in the 16th minute when she found the far corner of the net with a blistering strike off her right foot.

The movement leading up to the goal began inside Chelsea's half, with Carpenter having an early touch before passing to a teammate.

Moments later, Carpenter was unmarked down the right flank when Aggie Beever-Jones found her with a well-timed pass.

Carpenter launched her effort from just inside the penalty area, leaving Barcelona goalkeeper Cata Coll clutching at air as she attempted a save.

"It was a beautiful ball from Aggie to start with, and then I just saw space in front of me and just hit it," Carpenter told the BBC.

"I've been wanting to shoot a bit more and take my shots when I get them.

"Everybody has been telling me to shoot. I'm proud to get that first goal and get the momentum going."

Carpenter's goal gave Chelsea — which chose to rest Matildas great Sam Kerr from the match — a 1-0 lead, but Barcelona equalised via an Ewa Pajor goal eight minutes later.

A late shot on goal from Carpenter went wide, and the match ended in a stalemate.

"It's a little disappointing, I think we deserved to win that game, we had chances we could have converted," she said.

"I'm very proud of the team performance. We stuck to the game plan and brought it to Barcelona.

"We showed what this team is capable of when we a really playing our roles. I'm proud for the point but disappointed we didn't get three."

The result has Chelsea sixth out of 18 teams during the league phase of the competition.

Chelsea next faces Roma and Wolfsburg as it chases a top-four berth, which will guarantee automatic qualification for the quarterfinals.

Barcelona leads the standings with three wins and a draw from its four matches.
