    Gale warning for COOK

    Situation:
    A deep low is positioned just west of the South Island, moving southeastward and driving a strong northeasterly flow over New Zealand. Several fronts associated with the low will cross the country today. The large trough on Friday then shifts eastward, moving out of the region late in the day. A ridge of high pressure moves over New Zealand on Saturday. On Sunday, a low over the Tasman Sea approaches the centre of the country, followed by a strong southwesterly wind establishing itself by late Monday.

    Forecast issued at 0437hrs Thursday 03-Apr-2025
    Valid to 7 am Thursday for Wellington Harbour and the south coast from Sinclair Head to Baring Head.
    Strong wind advisory.
    Thursday: Variable 5 knots. Northerly 10 knots developing this morning, rising to 20 knots this afternoon, and to 25 knots gusting 35 knots this evening. Sea becoming rough this evening. Poor visibility in scattered rain. For the South Coast and Palliser Bay - Southerly swell 2 metres easing to 1 metre. For Castlepoint - Southerly swell 2 metres easing to 1 metre. Easterly swell 1 metre developing.

    Outlook until midnight Sunday:
    Friday: Northerly 25 knots. Rain, clearing. For the South Coast and Palliser
    Bay - Nil significant. For Castlepoint - Northeast swell 2 metres.
    Saturday: Northwest 20 knots, becoming southwest 10 knots early. Easing to
    variable 5 knots later. A few showers. For the South Coast and
    Palliser Bay - Southerly swell 1 metre developing. For Castlepoint -
    Northeast swell 2 metres dying out. Southeast swell 2 metres
    developing.
    Sunday: Variable 5 knots, becoming northerly 15 knots early. Showers
    developing. For the South Coast and Palliser Bay - Southerly swell 1
    metre. For Castlepoint - Southerly swell 2 metres easing.
